Workshop: Sharing Your Story Through Citizen Science

Wally Smith is an assistant professor of biology at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. His work focuses on the overlap between biodiversity conservation and ongoing socioeconomic transitions in rural Appalachia, particularly ways in which partnerships between scientists and the public can advance conservation and community development goals. He currently serves as a steering committee member for the Clinch River Valley Initiative—an effort to enhance one of North America’s most biodiverse watersheds—and is a contributing writer for Blue Ridge Outdoors magazine, where he explores outdoor recreation and land management issues across the southeast. He holds a Ph.D. in biological sciences from the University of Alabama and received the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia’s award for early-career achievement in 2017.
